MOTION GRAPHICS
When I was at Maidstone College of Art in the early 80s I got the opportunity to spend a few months working at the BBC with Liz Friedman, one of the top TV designers there. Until then I had not considered working in TV, rather I was more interested in print design, but thought I'd give it a go and see what I could learn.
It was the best career decision I ever made. I realized that I could design not in just print, but could have far more fun moving that print. The possibilities seemed endless and endless fun. After leaving college in 1986, spending some time at Imagination working on exhibition and retail graphics, I got the chance to work at a new TV graphics company called AXiS Associates, part of the then leading 3D effects and Post Production company, CAL Videographics. This gave me exposure to a whole load of new technology, Harry and Paintbox together with some brilliant mentoring from Graham Kern and Tricia King.
Sadly AXiS folded late 1988, but lucky for me I managed to get a position in BBC TV News (thanks Tricia) as an assistant designer. Richard Markell one of the three directors at English Markell Pockett had also said that If I wanted to learn about TV graphics, the best place to go would be BBC NEWS.
I did.
Thirty odd years later I'm still there. Still having fun and working in one of the best design departments in the world. News for me is a fantastic design challenge everyday. Everyday there is a new story, new deadlines often counted in minutes rather than days or weeks and frequently pivotal in delivering to our audience the information they need to know.
Here then starting from the present, going back to 1989, is just a small example of some of the work, projects and news events I've worked on and designed. I hope you find it as much fun and interest to look at as I have had designing them..
