Whilst modern design technology pretty much allows you to design as you go along, correcting and oh how wonderful, the never ending 'undo button', I still love to doodle thoughts out on paper, even if I have very little time for delivering the final design, It clarifies for me and frequently production, what we are agreeing on and what we are trying to get across. Its also pretty therapeutic and often triggers ideas and directions you may not have thought of by simply attacking the problem head on.

Collected here are some of the visuals created in coming up
with ideas over the last 30 odd years. One of the best methods was introduced to me by Graham Kern, Design Director at AXIS Associates in the late 80s. It involved the simple use of tracing paper and a fine line pen, usually black. The tracing medium has obvious benefits over paper, mainly multi layering and a far better in my opinion, surface to draw on. The best weight is 90gsm which stays flat after repeated use and is perfect for copiers and printers.
Pen wise, the EDDING “Zebra” pens in glorious RED or BLACK are my favourite pens, especially the red and work perfectly everytime with tracing.
